What is the cost to take part?

The cost per hiker this year is £25, which can be paid via the Group or paid by the individual/parent. There is no cost for volunteers.

What are the options for team sizes?

A team is made up of two, three, four or five young people, who all must be in the same age category.

I don't understand the age categories - can you explain them?

The Pathfinder age category is for any hiker who is at least 10½ years of age, but not 12½ yet. The Pathfinder Plus age category is for any hiker who is at least 12½ years of age, but still in Scouts or Guides – they cannot be registered as an Explorer or Ranger, and must walk the Explorer age category if this is the case. The Explorer age category is for any hiker who is at least 13½ years of age, and is registered as an Explorer or Ranger – a Scout or Guide cannot take part in the Explorer age category.

Do you need to be an Explorer to walk the Explorer age category?

Yes, or a Ranger. The Explorer age category is for any hiker who is at least 13½ years of age, but not 18 yet, and must be an Explorer or Ranger.

Can I move age category?

Hikers must walk the age category aligned with their age, unless pre-agreed by Cheshire Hike Organisers – and only on medical or special needs grounds.

Can you cater for special needs or restricted mobility?

Absolutely. Please contact [email protected] to discuss this further.

How do we deal with tents in a mixed gender team?

We only allow 2-3 man tents, with no larger or family-sized tents permitted. For mixed teams of two or three hikers, the second tent will be transported for them. For teams of four or five hikers, tents will need to be carried.

What is the volunteering process?

Volunteer registrations are now open. If you’re volunteering in any role – even just assisting another volunteer – you will need to be registered. You can read more about how to register by following this link.

Do I need to be registered on Compass to volunteer?

Yes. You will need to be registered with Scouts, and enter your membership number into Scouts EMS when registering to volunteer.

Do I need a DBS to volunteer?

Yes. You will need a valid DBS to volunteer. You will also need to be registered with Scouts, and enter your membership number into Scouts EMS when registering to volunteer. This will allow us to check your DBS is valid on the date of Cheshire Hike.

I didn't get the correct certificate, or something was missing?

Don’t worry! With the scale of Cheshire Hike, sometimes certificates, distance badges or neckers don’t make it to participants correctly. Sometimes they’re lost too. Whether you didn’t get something, or it’s been lost, you can place an order here and we’ll post it out to you.

Can I buy a Cheshire Hike woggle?

Our white woggles are Cheshire Hike branded without the year of the event. If you’d like to buy one, you can do this during the onboarding day, at the finish, or order them online and we’ll post them out to you!

I think I'm due a Brian Kershaw Award?

The specially designed ‘Brian Kershaw Woggle’ is for those who have completed every age category of Cheshire Hike. This makes it an “exclusive club” for those Scouts and Guides who have covered the three progressive route distances of 30kms, 40kms and 50-60kms. When you book onto Cheshire Hike, we’ll check if you’ve walked all three progressive distances. If you have, you’ll receive your certificate and woggle during the finish ceremony. Sometimes we don’t have full records, and if you think you’re due one and haven’t received it, please get in touch.
